The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) at Sagemont Preparatory Lower Campus recently organized a holiday drive to benefit ChildNet, a non-profit that supports vulnerable children in our community. In just six days, NEHS members used their service and leadership skills to brainstorm creative ways to promote the drive. They designed posters, campaigned at carpool every morning, and spread the word throughout the campus. Thanks to their dedication and the support of the Sagemont Prep community, over 100 gifts were donated for children and teens in foster care. Sagemont Prep’s Lion Wings Drones Team, currently ranked 7th in the nation, has once again demonstrated their excellence, achieving impressive results at the recent Panther Knights Flight Den Aerial Drone Competition. Both our middle school and high school teams performed exceptionally well, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and dedication to the sport. The middle school team made it to the semi-finals and earned an impressive 3rd ranking overall, proving their ability to compete at a high level. Meanwhile, the high school team dominated the competition, ranking 1st and earning multiple prestigious awards. The high school team was named the Teamwork Mission Champion and Skill Mission Champion and received the Airmanship Award, recognizing their superior technical skill, control, and sportsmanship. Both teams have qualified for the Regional Competition, where they will continue to represent Sagemont Prep with pride and determination. These achievements are a testament to the students’ hard work, strategic thinking, and collaboration, as well as the support of their dedicated coaches and mentors. We are proud of the Lion Wings for their outstanding accomplishments and look forward to their continued success at the regional level. Our Sagemont Prep students in Ms. Mejias’ civil engineering program honed their skills using professional survey equipment, gaining hands-on experience in a fundamental aspect of the field. Under expert instruction, they practiced techniques such as leveling, distance measurement, and angle determination with tools like total stations and theodolites. Applying these skills, the students tackled real-world challenges, such as mapping topographical features, planning construction layouts, and ensuring site accuracy for infrastructure projects. This practical experience deepened their understanding of how precise measurements and spatial analysis are critical to successful civil engineering designs and projects. #onlyatsagemontprep #civilengineering

Mrs. Michiels and our Sagemont Prep AP Chemistry students had the unique opportunity to conduct lab experiments at Florida International University (FIU). During the lab session, our students learned and applied key concepts in both organic transformations and analytical verification. The synthesis of aspirin involved two main processes: esterification, where salicylic acid reacts with acetic anhydride to form aspirin, and hydrolysis, where the reaction conditions are carefully controlled to yield the final product. Students observed and performed these transformations, gaining valuable experience in precise chemical reactions and techniques. Following the synthesis, students explored analytical methods to confirm the purity and structure of their synthesized aspirin. Using Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, they analyzed functional groups and characteristic absorption peaks, and through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, they confirmed the molecular structure. These analytical techniques provided students with an in-depth understanding of how chemists identify and verify the identity of compounds in the laboratory. The field trip not only provided practical experience with cutting-edge laboratory techniques but also underscored the relevance of chemistry in real-world applications, such as drug synthesis.
